About Michelle Simpson
Michelle Simpson is a Concept-Based Inquiry and Mathematics Specialist with more than 30 years of experience in education. She has taught in New Zealand, Oman, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and Sudan, and has held senior leadership roles including Director of Teaching and Learning, Elementary Principal and Head of Primary.
Michelle is an independent Erickson and Lanning CBCI Certified Trainer and a consultant with Professional Learning International. Her work brings together expertise in concept-based curriculum and instruction, mathematics education, curriculum development, professional learning and school leadership.
My approach
I believe professional learning is most effective when it connects directly with teachers’ curriculum, planning and classroom practice. My role is to work alongside leaders and teachers: clarifying ideas, asking useful questions, examining evidence of learning and helping teams turn conceptual intentions into coherent practice.
My work is grounded in the belief that students need both secure knowledge and skills, and opportunities to think conceptually, make connections and transfer their learning. I am particularly interested in how cognitive science can inform learning designed for understanding, transfer and long-term retention.
